Jacquelyn M. Stankard

Jacquelyn Marie Stankard (nee Herman) (1924-2018)

Jacquelyn M. Stankard passed away peacefully on January 3, 2018 at the age of 89.  Jackie was a lifelong resident of Akron with the exception of four years in Phoenix, Arizona in the mid 70’s.  She and her husband Ray also spent 28 winters in the warmth of Naples, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Raymond E. Stankard, her parents Frances and Theodore Herman, and her sister Patricia who passed away at the age of 8.  She is survived by her four sons - Mark (Laura), Mike (Karen), Jeff (Gina) and Jim (Tammy); and her eight grandchildren - Ryan, Tom, Shea (Paul Odell-Scott), Connor, Jack, Abby, Alexandra and Anna, and many other loving relatives and friends.

Jackie grew up in Firestone Park where she attended St. Paul’s church and grade school.  She graduated from St. Vincent High School where she gloried in being a majorette.  After graduation in 1946, she attended the University of Akron for two years before working in the office at Polsky’s Department Store and was later a secretary at Firestone.

Jackie met her future husband Ray Stankard at a wedding and it was “love at first sight” for both of them.  They were married within a year in September, 1958 and raised four sons. She and Ray were longtime members of St. Sebastian Parish. They were a great team and a beautiful couple, making friends and enjoying life wherever they went. Jackie was an active member of the Akron Christ Child Society for 55 years.  She enjoyed sewing, gardening, crafts, tennis, collecting artwork by Edna Hibel and cheering on her favorite sports teams - the Cavs, the Indians and all her grandkids’ teams. She was an amazing lady known for her fascinating stories, quick sense of humor, infectious laugh and kind heart.

The family is so very grateful for the love and assistance given by Janice Vincent for her care of Jackie over the past two years along with the staff at The Village of St. Edward in Fairlawn.

The family will receive friends on Monday, January 8, 2018 at Hummel Funeral Home, 500 East Exchange St, Akron 44304 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Sebastian Church on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at 11:00 AM. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery.
